Kellogg · At a glance
Warm, structured, behavioral
A friendly conversation that runs on a script: resume first, then teamwork, leadership and feedback stories, then goals and why Kellogg.
Who interviews you
Alumni are the largest group (29 of 68, plus 3 who also serve on adcom), followed closely by admissions staff (28), then current students (8). Adcom interviews have become more common since 2020, especially for applicants who could not be matched locally.
Where
Virtual (Zoom or Teams) in 50 of 68 reports and the large majority since 2020. In-person interviews are mostly from 2018 and 2019, off campus with an alum or on campus in Evanston, and a few recent ones were on campus.
How long
Number of interviews by length, from the 29 MBA Protocol clients who reported one.
Interview style
Behavioral (tell me about a time) with a resume walk-through opener
Nearly every report opens with a resume walk-through or 'tell me about yourself', then moves into behavioral prompts on diverse teams, difficult people, leadership and feedback before closing with goals, why MBA, why Kellogg and fit questions.
Blind or application read?
Blind (resume only). Reports consistently describe interviewers working from the resume only: one student interviewer asked 'straightforward blind interview questions', one applicant was told 'AdCom sees your resume but doesn't have access to application', and several alumni had clearly annotated the resume in advance. In a rare exception, an adcom interviewer also had the applicant's goals write-up.
Scheduling
Kellogg interviews a large share of applicants, and invitations often arrive soon after submission. Check your portal and email. Applicants with a local alum or student match are emailed the interviewer's name and contact and must reach out to schedule themselves, so they know who they are meeting. Applicants routed to adcom book a slot through the portal and do not learn the interviewer's identity until the Zoom opens, so clients should prepare interviewer questions that work for any audience.
Kellogg · What clients report
Inside the interview
The feel of the room
Overwhelmingly friendly and conversational, though most interviewers clearly work from a set question list and several keep a brisk pace to fit everything into 30 to 45 minutes. The feel is a structured behavioral interview delivered warmly: walk through the resume, then a series of 'tell me about a time' prompts on teamwork, leadership and feedback, then goals, why MBA, why Kellogg, and what you would contribute. Follow-ups are usually light; a handful of interviewers probed resume specifics hard (promotions, direct reports, company size, employment gaps). Only a few reports describe a cold, stiff or awkward interviewer, and those were mostly alumni interviews from earlier years.
What our clients say happens
Clients describe a predictable, warm interview that still covers a lot of ground. Most interviewers open with the resume, and a good number ask pointed clarifying questions about job transitions, promotions, team size and direct reports before moving on. Behavioral questions about working with diverse teams, handling difficult people, receiving constructive feedback and leading a team show up in a majority of reports, and 'three words your colleagues would use to describe you' is a signature Kellogg prompt. Follow-ups tend to be shallow; several clients noted the interviewer 'jumped from question to question' or seemed to be filling out a form. Time for applicant questions is usually 5 to 15 minutes, and alumni interviewers in particular tend to share their own experience freely. Interviewers generally seemed to have read the resume but nothing else. Pace ranges from leisurely to rushed.
