Where

Before 2020, interviews were in person, off campus. From the 2020/21 cycle on, the large majority were virtual (Zoom or Teams), though in-person meetings off campus reappeared in 2022 and 2023 for applicants who chose that option in the portal.

Interview style

Conversational resume walk- through with light behavioral questions

Nearly every report opens with a resume or tell-me-about-yourself prompt and moves through why MBA, why CBS and goals in a conversational flow; behavioral questions (teamwork, leadership style, conflict, mistakes) appear in a bit under half the reports and are usually one or two questions rather than the core of the interview.

Blind or application read?

Blind (resume only). Several reports (2023/24 cycle onward) say the applicant had to email their resume directly to the interviewer, one interviewer had not studied the resume closely, and one asked the applicant what they wrote in their Columbia essay, which suggests the interviewer did not have the essays. No report mentions the interviewer referencing essays or recommendations.

Scheduling

Applicants receive an email and go to the CBS portal, where they enter a zip code or city and are matched with an alumni Ambassador; in some years the portal offers time slots to pick, in others the applicant must email the alum directly to arrange a time. Interviewer name and email are usually shared 1 to 2 days before the chosen slot, and several clients were asked to send their resume to the interviewer themselves. Slots can fill fast and the window is short, and invitations can arrive within a few weeks of the deadline.

Columbia Business School · What clients report

Inside the interview

The feel of the room

Clients overwhelmingly describe the Columbia interview as friendly, casual and conversational. Several say it felt like coffee with another professional or catching up with an old friend, and a couple of alumni openly framed themselves as the applicant's advocate back to admissions. The structure is loose: a resume walk-through, why MBA, why Columbia, goals, then a few behavioral or contribution questions and time for the applicant's questions. A minority found it more formal or transactional, with one describing it as more interview-y than expected and another saying the alum was friendly but at arm's length.

What our clients say happens

Clients consistently report a relaxed, low-pressure conversation that stays close to the resume, goals and fit. Follow-ups tend to be curious rather than probing, although a few alumni with the same professional background as the applicant dug hard into industry specifics such as market trends, specific deals and current news in the field. Most interviewers ask only a handful of formal questions, and some let the applicant's answers cover ground so that explicit questions never come; one client had to volunteer why CBS because the interviewer skipped it. Interviewers generally leave generous time for the applicant's questions, and some conversations ran over time on them. Preparation on the interviewer's side varies: some had clearly read the resume and tailored questions to it, others arrived late or had barely skimmed it. Pace is unhurried in most cases.
