Everything in detail, with prices, published results and sources.

mbaMission is an MBA admissions consulting firm that has helped applicants since 1999 and runs a structured, consultant-led process built on expert writing and editing. MBA Protocol is a boutique coaching firm, founded by Angela Guido, a former mbaMission consultant, that starts with self-awareness work and coaches you to find and tell your own story, in your own words. If you already know what you want to say and you want experienced hands guiding each piece of the application, mbaMission’s model is built for that. If you need to work out what sets you apart first, or you’re pivoting careers, or you come from a crowded applicant pool, MBA Protocol’s model is built for that.

That’s the short version. The rest of this page is the long one, with prices, published results, and the questions worth asking both firms before you sign anything.

What is mbaMission?

mbaMission has been helping MBA applicants since 1999 and says it has helped more than 15,000 of them gain acceptance. Its homepage says Poets&Quants has named it number one among 135 firms for six years running (checked October 2026). In Poets&Quants’ May 2026 ranking of large firms, those with ten or more active reviewed consultants, mbaMission is first by client satisfaction score; the ranking measures reviews, not outcomes, and small boutiques like MBA Protocol are ranked in a different size category (Poets&Quants, 12 May 2026).

The firm describes its consultants as graduates of premier MBA programs and expert writers and editors. Its main offer is the Complete Start-to-Finish Package, priced by the seniority of your consultant (Senior Consultant, Managing Director, Executive Director, or Founder) and by the number of schools. Scholarship essays are included, as many as the number of schools in your package (checked October 2026).

mbaMission prices by who you work with. The same package costs more with a Managing Director than with a Senior Consultant, more again with an Executive Director, and most with the founder, so the firm’s own price list tells you it treats some consultants as more valuable than others. Hourly work follows the same ladder: $440 an hour with a Senior Consultant, $600 with a Managing Director, and $775 with an Executive Director, each with a two-hour minimum and a two-business-day response time (checked October 2026). It also sells onTrack, an on-demand application platform with 20 core learning modules, video lessons, and dashboards, sold by subscription length. And it offers a free 30-minute consultation.

What is MBA Protocol?

MBA Protocol helps humble overachievers secure M7 and top-15 MBA admissions and scholarships to power bold pivots into new industries and leadership roles. Angela Guido founded it and wrote the method the coaches use. She has coached MBA applicants full time since 2008, after Yale, a Chicago Booth MBA, where she was a member of the Dean’s Student Admissions Committee, and the Boston Consulting Group, where she was a consultant and MBA recruiter. She’s the author of Interview Hero.

The method has three named parts. You Discovery™ is self-awareness work that happens before anyone opens an essay prompt. Career Gameplan™ is your post-MBA vision, built so your goals hold up under questioning. Communication That Connects™ is the storytelling and communication skills you’ll use in essays, interviews, recruiting, and the job after that.

Coaches shape the message with you. You write your own essays. No ghostwriting.

Every MBA Guided Quest client has a dedicated senior coach. Each coach takes at most 10 clients per round and 20 a year, which as far as we know is the lowest cap in the industry. On the Guided Quest Core and Guided Quest Admit All Access tiers, that coach is with you from start to finish. MBA Guided Quest Essentials covers the application build only. Every tier includes unlimited essay drafts, and every package includes the MBAmo All-Schools Readout, interpreted with your coach to shape a school portfolio with realistic reaches, matches, and safety schools. Every MBA Guided Quest client is also invited to optional group coaching sessions, many led by Angela Guido, where clients learn alongside each other and stay connected through the process. And every client's work gets input from the whole coaching team at weekly team huddles. Outside the paid work, there’s the free MBA Momentum Club for applicants 4 to 36 months out, and a test prep partnership with Engage Prep.

What’s the difference between consulting and coaching?

This is the distinction that matters most, and it has little to do with logistics.

A consulting firm sells expertise. The consultant knows what a strong application to Wharton or Booth looks like, and guides you through producing one: profile, school list, essay drafts, revisions, resume, interview. Many firms work this way, including those built around former admissions officers. mbaMission’s version is built on expert writers and editors with top-program MBAs. The work is organized around deliverables, and it’s efficient when you already know what you want to say.

A coaching practice sells something different. A consultant tells you what to say based on what they know. A coach helps you figure out what to say based on who you are, then builds your skill at saying it. At MBA Protocol a few things happen that many firms skip.

Self-awareness comes before any essay

Before you touch a prompt, you go through You Discovery™, a structured process for surfacing the experiences, values, and leadership qualities that are the real foundation of your application. Many people find things in this process they couldn’t have written about before it. The MBA Story Quiz gives you a small taste in about a minute.

Communication skills get built, not borrowed

Communication That Connects™ builds the skill of telling your story so that it lands, and that skill stays with you through interviews, recruiting, and leadership long after you hit submit. Coaching builds something in you, not only for you.

What happens to the schools outside your package

At mbaMission, your package covers a set number of schools, and the essay work stays with those schools. With a Senior Consultant, each additional school is $2,475 on its price list, and $2,675 by card ($2,595 by bank transfer) in its shop when added later (checked November 2026).

At MBA Protocol, the MBA Guided Quest Core and MBA Guided Quest Admit All Access tiers include brainstorming and storyboarding for extra schools beyond your coached ones, matching the number of coached schools. Three coached schools gives you three extra, so six in total. When you write those other three yourself, you’re not starting from zero. The MBA Guided Quest Essentials tier doesn’t include this. The thinking behind it is laid out in How to Build an MBA School List That Actually Works.

An edited essay sounds like a better version of what you wrote. A story-shaped essay sounds like you.
Deciding which you want is most of the decision.

What does each firm publish about results?

mbaMission publishes its 2025-26 season results on its site. As of 22 May 2026: 969 total acceptances, 452 clients admitted, 616 M7 acceptances, and more than $23 million in scholarships. Its site doesn’t publish a success rate or say how many clients it worked with in total that season (checked October 2026). Divide the two figures it does publish and the scholarship money comes to roughly $51,000 per admitted client for the season. MBA Protocol’s admitted clients averaged $109,000 over the last three years. The periods and counting rules differ, so treat that as a rough comparison, but it’s the one the published numbers allow.

Acceptance totals can’t be turned into a success rate without the number of clients who applied. Ask any firm, us included, for both.

MBA Protocol publishes both, with the methodology that produces them. Since 2018, 93.1% of MBA Protocol clients who applied earned at least one admit. We push every client to include both reach and safer schools in their portfolio. Some decide to skip safer schools, knowing exactly where they stand and accepting the risk. The 99.1% figure leaves out only the clients who made that choice and then didn’t get in anywhere. Everyone else is counted, including clients who skipped the safer schools and got in anyway, and clients who followed the guidance and failed to get in. Admitted clients averaged $109,000 in scholarships over the last three years. The methodology page spells out what counts as a success, what’s excluded, and how school selection affects the numbers. You can ask any firm for the same.

MBA Protocol also publishes research that has nothing to sell. Every two years the team pulls the employment reports of the top U.S. business schools, cleans the data so programs can be compared fairly, and releases it free as the MBA Career Placement Report. The 2026 edition covers 29 schools: employment, pay, AI exposure, and visa data. As far as we know, MBA Protocol is the only firm that publishes this. It’s the same data the coaches use to build school lists and Career Gameplans.

And one more thing MBA Protocol puts in writing: if you don’t need a coach, the team will say so. The free Package Build Call ends with a straight answer about where you stand, which schools make sense, and what we’d do first, and sometimes that answer is that you can do this on your own.

How much does each cost?

mbaMission’s Complete Start-to-Finish Package, at credit-card prices (checked October 2026): with a Senior Consultant, $6,600 for one school, $8,350 for two, and $10,000 for three. With a Managing Director, $7,950, $10,200, and $12,200. With an Executive Director, $10,000, $12,300, and $14,300. Working with the founder, Jeremy Shinewald, is $20,800 for three schools, $23,800 for four, up to $32,800 for seven. Paying by ACH takes about 3% off. Hourly work is $440, $600, or $775 an hour depending on the consultant’s level, two-hour minimum.

MBA Protocol’s 1:1 program is MBA Guided Quest, from $5,000 for one school. Most clients invest $12,000 to $18,000. There are three tiers. MBA Guided Quest Essentials is from $5,000 for one school and $8,500 for three. MBA Guided Quest Core, the most popular tier, is $9,900 for one school and $13,500 for three. MBA Guided Quest Admit All Access is $12,000 for one school and $17,500 for three.

Published package prices at credit-card rates, checked October 2026
Package1 school3 schools
mbaMission, Senior Consultant$6,600$10,000
mbaMission, Managing Director$7,950$12,200
mbaMission, Executive Director$10,000$14,300
mbaMission, FounderNot offered$20,800
MBA Guided Quest Essentials$5,000$8,500
MBA Guided Quest Core$9,900$13,500
MBA Guided Quest Admit All Access$12,000$17,500

Both are a serious investment, so the useful question is what the process is likely to produce, in admits and in scholarship money. MBA Protocol’s admitted clients averaged $109,000 in scholarships over the last three years, and individual clients have received more than $1.4 million in scholarship offers. For many admitted clients, scholarships cover the cost of coaching many times over. To weigh that against what the degree pays afterward, the Career Report shows employment and salary data for 29 schools.

Which model fits which applicant?

mbaMission’s model is built for applicants who

  • Already know what they want to say and want expert writers and editors guiding it through each school’s essays
  • Have a clear, linear career narrative and settled post-MBA goals
  • Want to choose a consultant by seniority level, from Senior Consultant up to the firm’s Founder
  • Want an on-demand platform (onTrack) as a lower-cost alternative

MBA Protocol’s model is built for applicants who

  • Aren’t sure yet what sets them apart, or suspect the obvious angle isn’t the strongest one
  • Are pivoting careers or have a non-linear path that resists easy summary (see How to Use an MBA to Pivot Careers)
  • Come from an overrepresented pool (consulting, private equity, finance) and need to stand apart from hundreds of similar resumes
  • Want to write their own essays, in their own voice, with a coach shaping the substance alongside them
  • Want thought partnership across their full school portfolio, not only the coached schools
  • Want to come out of the process more self-aware and articulate, as well as admitted

Not sure which column you’re in? The MBA Story Quiz takes about a minute and tells you your MBA story type before you talk to anyone.

What should you ask any MBA admissions consultant before you hire?

Whichever firm you’re evaluating, ask these.

  1. Who will I work with directly, and does that person stay with me from start to finish? Some firms assign a primary consultant but rotate team members by stage.
  2. Do you start with my story or with the prompt? Prompt-first is efficient. Story-first ensures an optimal finished product.
  3. What happens before any writing begins? If the answer is “we dive right into essays,” the firm is built for applicants who already know what they want to say, or who are happy to take the consultant’s recommendations as given.
  4. How do you handle applicants who don’t know what their post-MBA goals are yet?
  5. Who writes the essays? Ask how much of the final text will be yours.
  6. What’s your success rate, and how do you define it? “Most clients get in somewhere” is not a tracked percentage.
  7. How do you track outcomes, and what’s excluded? Ask what counts as a success, what period the data covers, and how school selection affects the numbers.
  8. What happens to the schools outside my package?
  9. How does your work help me beyond the admit? Does it end at submit?

What do the reviews say?

Reviews in this industry deserve more scrutiny than most buyers give them. Read the text, not the count. Decide what you want the process to do for you, then look for it in the words.

MBA Protocol’s reviews page holds 584 client stories and 187 Poets&Quants reviews, sorted by the worry you walked in with: your test score, an unusual path, not being sure you’re competitive, everyone in your job applying, paying for the MBA, and whether coaching is worth it. Start with the one that’s yours.

We tested this ourselves. In October 2026 we took 300 of mbaMission’s Poets&Quants reviews and 318 of ours, removed every name, mixed them in with reviews of four other firms, and scored each one blind against fixed rules for a single question: does the reviewer describe a personal relationship with the coach (being known, believed in, stood by as a person), or a service delivered well? 36% of mbaMission’s reviews described a relationship, against 77% of MBA Protocol’s (how we did it, and what it doesn’t show). Allowing for sampling, mbaMission’s likely range is 28% to 43% with the percentage depending on which consultant at mbaMission you work with, and ours is 74% to 81%. mbaMission’s reviews are shorter on average, and comparing reviews of the same length the figures are 48% and 78% respectively. Results vary by consultant: a few mbaMission consultants’ reviews read as personal as any we scored. If you go with mbaMission, ask who your consultant will be and read that person’s reviews.

Reviews that describe a relationship with the coach
mbaMission36%
MBA Protocol77%

The other signal worth weighting is outcome data. A scholarship is what happens when a school wants an applicant badly enough to pay. Rankings measure satisfaction across many clients; they don’t measure outcomes. For outcomes, ask each firm for its published results and the method behind them.

Frequently asked questions

Is MBA Protocol better than mbaMission?

It depends on whether you already know what you want to say: if you do and you want expert writers and editors to help polish it, mbaMission’s model fits; if you need to work out what sets you apart first, MBA Protocol’s does.

They’re built on different philosophies about what works, and toward different goals. mbaMission’s model rests on expert writing and editing: a more polished application, revised with an experienced consultant, with the goal of getting you in. MBA Protocol grew out of Career Protocol, which began as career development for MBA graduates, and treats communication as a skill you hone. The goal is to make you a stronger candidate, and the application gets better because you do. MBA Protocol publishes its results with the methodology: since 2018, 93.1% of clients who applied earned at least one admit, and 99.1% did when you leave out only the clients who chose not to follow its school-portfolio guidance and were turned down everywhere.

How much does mbaMission cost?

mbaMission’s Complete Start-to-Finish Package starts at $6,600 for one school with a Senior Consultant, $8,350 for two, and $10,000 for three, at credit-card prices (checked October 2026). Managing Director packages are $7,950 / $10,200 / $12,200, Executive Director $10,000 / $12,300 / $14,300, and the founder’s packages run from $20,800 for three schools to $32,800 for seven. Hourly help is $440, $600, or $775 an hour by consultant level, two-hour minimum.

How much does MBA Protocol cost?

MBA Guided Quest starts at $5,000 for one school on the MBA Guided Quest Essentials tier. MBA Guided Quest Core, the most popular tier, is $9,900 for one school and $13,500 for three, and MBA Guided Quest Admit All Access is $12,000 for one school and $17,500 for three. Most clients invest $12,000 to $18,000, and admitted clients averaged $109,000 in scholarships over the last three years.

What’s the difference between MBA coaching and MBA consulting?

A consultant tells you what to say based on what they know works. A coach helps you figure out what to say based on who you are, then builds your skill at saying it. mbaMission operates as a consulting firm; MBA Protocol operates as a coaching practice where clients write their own essays.

Does mbaMission publish a success rate?

As of October 2026, mbaMission publishes season totals (969 acceptances, 452 clients admitted, 616 M7 acceptances, and $23M+ in scholarships for 2025-26) but not a success rate or the total number of clients it worked with. MBA Protocol publishes both of its rates since 2018: 93.1% across every client who applied, and 99.1% excluding only clients who chose not to follow its school-portfolio guidance and were turned down everywhere. It links the full tracking methodology.

Does MBA Protocol help with schools outside my package?

Yes, on two of the three tiers. MBA Guided Quest Core and MBA Guided Quest Admit All Access include brainstorming and storyboarding for extra schools beyond the coached ones, matching the number of coached schools, so three coached schools gives you six in total. MBA Guided Quest Essentials covers the coached schools only.

The bottom line

mbaMission’s model is built for applicants who know what they want to say and want a structured, consultant-led process run by expert writers and editors who help polish it. MBA Protocol is built for humble overachievers who want M7 and top-15 admits and scholarships, who may be pivoting into a new industry or role, who come from crowded applicant pools, or who honestly aren’t sure yet what sets them apart. The work starts with self-awareness, the essays stay in your own words, and the skills outlast the application.
