Personal MBA Coach and MBA Protocol are both boutique MBA admissions firms with a founder at the center, and they run different models. Personal MBA Coach is a consulting practice: application strategy and essay support from Scott Edinburgh, M7 admissions consultants, or former M7 admissions directors, with test prep in-house. MBA Protocol is a coaching practice: self-awareness work first, then storytelling skills, with you writing your own essays and a dedicated senior coach shaping the substance. If you know what you want to say and want expert input executing it, the consulting model is built for you. If you need to figure out what you have to say first, or want to come out of the process more articulate as well as admitted, the coaching model is built for you. The facts behind that answer follow.

What is Personal MBA Coach?

Personal MBA Coach was founded by Scott Edinburgh, a Wharton MBA and MIT graduate with 18 years of admissions consulting experience and, per the firm’s site, a former board member of AIGAC, the Association of International Graduate Admissions Consultants. Poets&Quants ranked him the #1 MBA admissions consultant worldwide in 2026. Poets&Quants’ consultant ranking counts verified positive reviews submitted in a single year (September 2024 to August 2025); Edinburgh placed first with 55 of them. (Each MBA Protocol coach takes at most 20 clients a year.)

The team is Edinburgh plus consultants the site describes as M7 admissions consultants and two former M7 admissions directors. GMAT, GRE, and Executive Assessment tutoring is offered in-house.

What it reports publicly (checked October 2026):

  • A 96% success rate. Its website does not say how the rate is defined or what period it covers.
  • Over $11 million in client scholarships “last year.” The year is not named on the page, and this is a total, not a per-client figure.

Comprehensive Package prices on its own product page start at $6,950 for one school with an M7 Admissions Consultant. The full ladder is in the cost section below.

What is MBA Protocol?

MBA Protocol helps humble overachievers secure M7 and top-15 MBA admissions and scholarships to power bold pivots into new industries and leadership roles. It was founded by Angela Guido (Yale philosophy grad, Chicago Booth MBA, consultant and MBA recruiter at the Boston Consulting Group, full-time MBA coach since 2008). In 2023, Poets&Quants named Career Protocol, as MBA Protocol was then called, its top medium-sized MBA admissions consulting firm, with a 9.9 client satisfaction score across 60 reviews (Poets&Quants, 2 May 2023).

Not only did I receive acceptances to the two programs to which I applied, I also discovered a lot about myself in the process.

Class of 2021 Admit · worked with Angela

It is a coaching firm, and that word changes what the work feels like week to week, so here is what it means in practice.

Every engagement is built on three named methods. You Discovery™ is self-awareness work that happens before any essay is drafted: the experiences, values, and leadership qualities you’d skip past because they feel ordinary to you. Career Gameplan™ is a post-MBA vision specific enough to give the whole application a direction. Communication That Connects™ is the storytelling and communication skill set you build while drafting and keep long after the admit. Story Shaping™ is what you and your coach do with your drafts: shaping the substance rather than editing your lines.

You write your own essays. There is no ghostwriting. Every Guided Quest client has a dedicated senior coach, capped at 10 clients per round and 20 a year (as far as we know, the lowest cap in the industry), and on the MBA Guided Quest Core and MBA Guided Quest Admit All Access tiers that coach is with you from start to finish. Every MBA Guided Quest client is also invited to optional group coaching sessions, many led by Angela Guido, where clients learn alongside each other and stay connected through the process. And every client's work gets input from the whole coaching team at weekly team huddles.

What MBA Protocol reports publicly, with the tracking methodology published:

  • 93.1% of clients who applied since 2018 earned at least one admit.
  • 99.1% did, leaving out only the clients who chose not to follow the school-portfolio guidance and were turned down everywhere.
  • $109,000 average scholarship per admitted client over the last three years.

What’s the real difference between them?

Both firms are founder-led boutiques that publish outcome numbers. The difference is what each one believes produces the result, and that belief shapes everything you’ll experience as a client.

Personal MBA Coach’s model, like those of several larger firms, draws on people who have worked on the admissions side. Its site describes its consultants as M7 admissions consultants and names two former M7 admissions directors on the team. That model is built around expert judgment: people who know what a committee looks for, guiding your strategy and your essays toward it.

MBA Protocol’s model holds that before you can decide what to say or how to say it, you need to know who you are. So the work starts upstream. You Discovery™ comes first, then the Career Gameplan™, and only then essay strategy and drafting. The coach’s job is to help you find what’s distinctive about you and build the skill to express it in your own words to your target audience (the schools and what they want).

Neither model is better in the abstract. One is designed to help you execute a well-organized application with expert input. The other is designed to build something in you, so you walk out more self-aware and a stronger communicator, with your admit. Which one you want depends on where you’re starting. The MBA Story Quiz takes about a minute and gives you a first read on whether you already know what you want to say or still need to work it out.

What does each firm publish about results?

Numbers are where comparison shoppers look first, so here is how to read them.

Personal MBA Coach reports a 96% success rate and over $11 million in client scholarships last year. Its site does not say how the 96% is defined, who is counted, or what period it covers (checked October 2026). That is common across the industry; many firms publish a headline rate without the method behind it.

MBA Protocol publishes the method. The success-rate methodology explains what counts as a success, what is excluded, and how school selection affects the numbers. Two figures matter. Since 2018, 93.1% of MBA Protocol clients who applied earned at least one admit. We push every client to include both reach and safer schools in their portfolio. Some decide to skip safer schools, knowing exactly where they stand and accepting the risk. The 99.1% figure leaves out only the clients who made that choice and then didn’t get in anywhere. Everyone else is counted, including clients who skipped the safer schools and got in anyway, and clients who followed the guidance and failed to get in. When you read any firm’s success rate, ask what the denominator is.

Scholarship totals and scholarship averages measure different things. An average tells you what one admitted client typically received; a total doesn’t. MBA Protocol’s admitted clients averaged $109,000 each over the last three years, which covers the cost of coaching many times over.

MBA Protocol also publishes the MBA Career Placement Report. Every two years the team pulls the employment reports of the top U.S. business schools, cleans the data so programs can be compared fairly, and publishes the findings free. The 2026 edition covers 29 schools: employment, pay, AI exposure, and visa data. As far as we know, MBA Protocol is the only firm that publishes this. Coaches use the same data to build clients’ school lists.

How much does each cost?

Personal MBA Coach publishes Comprehensive Package prices on its product page (checked October 2026):

  • With an M7 Admissions Consultant: $6,950 for one school, $8,950 for two, $10,950 for three, up to $19,550 for nine.
  • With a Former M7 Admissions Director: $7,700 for one school, $9,950 for two, $11,950 for three, up to $20,550 for nine.
  • With Scott Edinburgh: from $12,750 for two schools and $14,750 for three, up to $25,150 for nine.
  • Each school added later: $2,600.

MBA Protocol’s 1:1 program is the MBA Guided Quest. Prices start at $5,000 for one school, and most clients invest $12,000 to $18,000. There are three tiers:

  • MBA Guided Quest Essentials: from $5,000 for one school, $8,500 for three. Covers the application build only.
  • MBA Guided Quest Core, the most popular tier: $9,900 for one school, $13,500 for three. Your coach is with you start to finish.
  • MBA Guided Quest Admit All Access: $12,000 for one school, $17,500 for three. Your coach is with you start to finish.

Every tier includes unlimited essay drafts and the MBAmo All-Schools Readout, interpreted with your coach to shape a school portfolio with realistic reaches, matches, and safety schools. MBA Guided Quest Core and MBA Guided Quest Admit All Access also include brainstorming and storyboarding for extra schools beyond the coached ones, matching the number of coached schools. Three coached schools gives you three extra, so you get strategy on six and execute the other three yourself. MBA Guided Quest Essentials does not include this.

Before anyone quotes you a price, it helps to know where you stand. MBAmo, the free MBA odds calculator, shows your odds at your target school, free, with the five things schools weigh most.

How is test prep handled?

Personal MBA Coach offers GMAT, GRE, and Executive Assessment tutoring in-house, so admissions and test prep come from one firm. Though Angela Guido, MBA Protocol’s founder, taught the GMAT with Manhattan Prep for seven years, MBA Protocol partners with Engage Prep instead of providing those services directly. Members of the free MBA Momentum Club get discounted test prep there, and coaching clients get a deeper discount. If you still have a test to take, decide which arrangement suits you before you decide on a firm.

Which model fits which applicant?

Personal MBA Coach’s model is built for applicants who:

  • Know what they want to say and want a structured process, with expert input, to execute it.
  • Want strategy and essay guidance from people with M7 admissions experience, including former M7 admissions directors.
  • Want a founder-led practice with a high public ranking.
  • Still need GMAT, GRE, or EA support and want admissions and test prep from one firm.

MBA Protocol’s model is built for applicants who:

  • Haven’t worked out yet what they have to say, or suspect their current angle is the generic version.
  • Come from an overrepresented pool (consulting, private equity, finance) and need to stand apart from applicants with near-identical credentials.
  • Are pivoting careers or have a non-linear path that resists a tidy summary. How to Use an MBA to Pivot Careers is where that work starts.
  • Want to write their own essays, in their own voice, with a coach helping shape the substance.
  • Want skills that carry into interviews, recruiting, and leadership, so the process builds competencies that last.
  • Want thought partnership across the whole school list, including the schools outside the package.

Not sure which list you’re on? Start with the Story Quiz. And if you’re not sure you should apply this year at all, Is 2026 the Right Year to Apply for an MBA? walks through that call. The honest answer may be that you don’t need to hire anyone yet.

What should you ask any MBA admissions consultant before you hire?

Ask these of every firm on your list, including MBA Protocol. How to Choose Your MBA Application Support Team goes deeper on each.

  1. Who will I work with directly, and will that person stay with me through the whole process?
  2. How many clients will my coach or consultant work with this cycle?
  3. How many live sessions are included, and what does a typical week look like? Some firms run mostly on drafts and returned edits; others run on regular calls. Know which one you’re buying.
  4. Do you start with my story or with the prompt? Prompt-first is efficient. Story-first ensures an optimal finished product.
  5. What happens before any writing begins? If the answer is “we dive right into essays,” the firm is built for applicants who already know what they want to say, or who are happy to take the consultant’s recommendations as given.
  6. How do you handle applicants who don’t yet know what they want to say?
  7. What is your success rate, how is it defined, and what period does it cover?
  8. What is included in and excluded from your statistics, and how does school selection affect them?
  9. Who writes the essays? Ask it plainly, and listen to the whole answer.
  10. How does the work benefit me after the admit?
  11. What happens to the schools outside my package?

What do the reviews say?

Rankings measure satisfaction across many clients. They don’t measure outcomes, and they don’t tell you what the work felt like. For that, read reviews in full, with your own concerns in mind.

MBA Protocol’s reviews page holds 584 client stories and 187 Poets&Quants reviews, searchable across every dimension you might be considering: your test score, an unusual path, everyone in your job applying, paying for the MBA, and whether coaching is worth it. Pick the one that’s keeping you up at night and read what people in that spot say happened.

We tested this ourselves. In October 2026 we took 124 of Personal MBA Coach’s Poets&Quants reviews and 318 of ours, removed every name, mixed them in with reviews of four other firms, and scored each one blind against fixed rules for a single question: does the reviewer describe a personal relationship with the coach (being known, believed in, stood by as a person), or a service delivered well? 11% of Personal MBA Coach’s reviews described a relationship, against 77% of MBA Protocol’s (how we did it, and what it doesn’t show). Allowing for sampling, Personal MBA Coach’s likely range is 4% to 15%, and ours is 74% to 81%. Personal MBA Coach’s reviews are short (a median of 89 words), which leaves less room to describe a relationship, so the fairer test compares reviews of the same length: 25% against 78%. Its reviews focus on strategy, interview prep and results, which is what the firm leads with.

Frequently asked questions

Is MBA Protocol better than Personal MBA Coach?

They’re built on different philosophies about what works, and toward different goals. Personal MBA Coach’s model rests on expert judgment: strategy and essay guidance from M7 admissions consultants and former M7 admissions directors, with the goal of executing your application the way a committee wants to see it. It reports a 96% success rate that its site does not define (checked October 2026). MBA Protocol grew out of Career Protocol, which began as career development for MBA graduates, and treats communication as a skill you hone. The goal is to make you a stronger candidate, and the application gets better because you do. MBA Protocol publishes its results with the methodology: since 2018, 93.1% of clients who applied earned at least one admit, and 99.1% did when you leave out only the clients who chose not to follow its school-portfolio guidance and were turned down everywhere.

How much does Personal MBA Coach cost?

Comprehensive Package prices on its product page start at $6,950 for one school with an M7 Admissions Consultant and $7,700 with a Former M7 Admissions Director; packages with Scott Edinburgh start at $12,750 for two schools (checked October 2026). The top of the ladder is $25,150 for nine schools with Edinburgh, and each school added later is $2,600.

How much does MBA Protocol cost?

MBA Guided Quest starts at $5,000 for one school on the MBA Guided Quest Essentials tier, and most clients invest $12,000 to $18,000. MBA Guided Quest Core, the most popular tier, is $9,900 for one school or $13,500 for three; MBA Guided Quest Admit All Access is $12,000 for one school or $17,500 for three. Every tier includes unlimited essay drafts and a dedicated senior coach.

What is the difference between MBA coaching and MBA consulting?

A consultant advises you on what to say based on expert knowledge of what schools look for. A coach helps you figure out what to say based on who you are, and builds the skill to say it. Personal MBA Coach is a consulting practice; MBA Protocol is a coaching practice, and its clients write their own essays.

Does Personal MBA Coach or MBA Protocol cover more schools?

Both firms price packages by the number of schools. MBA Protocol’s MBA Guided Quest Core and MBA Guided Quest Admit All Access tiers add brainstorming and storyboarding for extra schools matching the number of coached schools, so a three-school package includes strategy for six. Personal MBA Coach adds schools to a package at $2,600 each (checked October 2026).

The bottom line

Personal MBA Coach is a founder-led consulting practice: application strategy and essay support from M7 admissions consultants and former M7 admissions directors, with test prep in-house, from $6,950 for one school. Its model is built for applicants who know what they want to say and want expert help executing it.

MBA Protocol starts upstream. It is built for humble overachievers who haven’t yet worked out what they have to say, who come from crowded pools or non-linear paths, and who want to finish the process more articulate and more self-aware, with their own essays in their own voice. If that describes you, this is the firm built for you. If it doesn’t, pick accordingly.
