Berkeley Haas · At a glance

  • Admissions1 · 5%
  • Students4 · 18%

Alumni conducted 15 of 22 interviews and current students 4. Two were pre-recorded video interviews, and one was with a member of the admissions team.

Where

Through 2019 interviews were split between campus and alumni meetings in hub cities, held off campus. From 2020 on, most interviews in our reports were virtual (Zoom or Google Meet), with a few in person, and the portal has offered a choice between a live virtual slot and a pre-recorded video interview; in some seasons only virtual interviews were offered.

How long

Most live interviews run 45 to 60 minutes, including about 10 to 15 minutes for your questions.

Interview style

Behavioral (tell me about a time)

Beyond why MBA and why Haas, nearly every question is a behavioral prompt tied to a Haas leadership principle: promoting diversity and inclusion, handling an idea that was rejected, challenging the status quo, humility, risk, inspiring a team.

Blind or application read?

Blind (resume only). One report says the interviewer mentioned having read the resume beforehand, and several open with a resume walk; no report describes the interviewer referencing essays or recommendations. Interviewers work from a school-supplied question list, which fits a resume-based format.

Scheduling

Invitation comes by email with a link to the application portal, where you pick a date and time (and in recent years choose live virtual or pre-recorded). Haas then emails to connect you with the assigned interviewer, who sends the video call invite; in a few cases the applicant was given the alum's contact and arranged the time directly. In our clients' reports, applicants knew who their interviewer was in advance; on-campus and hub-city alumni interviews existed before 2020, and some applicants are invited to an Interview Day on campus.

Berkeley Haas · What clients report

Inside the interview

The feel of the room

Live Haas interviews are described as friendly, warm and encouraging in nearly every report, with several applicants calling it the most conversational interview of their season and one calling it warm and feelings-focused. At the same time it is clearly structured: interviewers are given a list of required questions by the school, often say so at the start, and work through them while taking notes and asking follow-ups. A few interviews opened professionally and loosened up once the applicant got to ask questions. A tough interviewer is still possible, even here.

What our clients say happens

Clients report a warm conversation that nonetheless moves briskly through a fixed set of questions, sometimes with no 'tell me about yourself' at all; several applicants were jolted by an interview that opened straight with 'Why Haas?' Follow-up questions digging into stories are common and several reports say to expect them. The diversity, equity and inclusion question is close to guaranteed (21 of 22 reports) and is often worded like the application's DEI prompt. Interviewers generally seemed prepared, engaged and encouraging, with some responding to answers with explicit praise. Live interviews run about 45 minutes, typically 30 minutes of questions and 10 to 15 for the applicant's own, and alumni frequently stay on longer; one report notes the applicant's own questions were not written down or shared with adcom. Applicants who had done multiple interviews that season said Haas asked the most questions, including unexpected ones like a recent book recommendation.
