Interview style

Scripted behavioral (fixed question set)

Nearly every report lists the same core questions in the same order: proudest professional accomplishment, a time you listened or engaged a different perspective, goals and why MBA, why SOM, contribution to the community, and your submitted quote. Interviewers read from a form and note answers against each question.

Blind or application read?

Blind (resume only). Several interviewers opened with 'I've seen your resume' and skipped the resume walk-through, but no report mentions essays, recommendations, or application details being referenced. The only application element that comes up is the quote applicants submit to the portal before the interview, which is asked about in most reports.

Scheduling

Invitation by email with a link to a portal calendar where you self-select a date and time, choosing in-person or virtual. Interviewer identity is usually not shared in advance; one client was paired with a student the morning of. Recent on-campus invites include a full day (one report says 1.5 days) of programming.

Yale SOM · What clients report

Inside the interview

The feel of the room

Friendly and professional, with a clearly scripted question set. Almost every report describes the interviewer (nearly always a student) reading from a sheet of five to eight set questions and taking notes on it, yet most still call the tone relaxed and conversational. A few describe the interviewer as stiff, stern, or awkwardly tied to the script. Follow-up probing is light; interviewers mostly move through the list and let you answer.

What our clients say happens

Clients consistently describe a low-key, predictable interview that runs close to exactly 30 minutes. The question set barely changes from year to year; one applicant noted the questions were word for word the same within the 2020/21 cycle, and the 2022 through 2024 reports show the same spine. Follow-ups are usually a single clarifying question (what specifically did you do, how did you incorporate the feedback), not deep probing. Recent interviewers do not ask walk-me-through-your-resume, which threw off applicants who expected it, so be ready to open with an accomplishment story instead. Time for applicant questions varies widely, from none to 15 minutes, depending on how fast you talk and the interviewer's style. Several reports mention the student interviewer reading unnatural phrasing off paper, and the submitted quote is occasionally skipped. On-campus interview days (2022 onward) are repeatedly praised, with student panels, mock classes, tours, and a reception, and many candidates interviewing on a given day.
