Cornell Johnson · At a glance
Friendly, fit-focused, practical
A short, friendly conversation about your plans: resume, why MBA and why Johnson, goals and a Plan B, with few or no behavioral stories.
Who interviews you
Current students conducted 9 of 15 interviews, and admissions committee members the rest. In an earlier cycle, an on-campus LEAD day involved a mix of students and adcom across group activities plus a one-on-one with a student.
Where
Interviews can be on Zoom or in person in Ithaca. Most of our clients interviewed on Zoom from 2020 onward. In earlier cycles, in-person interviews were part of LEAD (Leadership Exploration and Assessment Day) on campus.
How long
Usually a 30-minute slot, sometimes running a little over.
Interview style
Conversational resume walk- through with fit and goals probing
Nearly every interview opens with a resume walk-through or tell me about yourself, and the rest centers on goals, Plan B, why Johnson, clubs and who you have spoken to. Behavioral prompts appear in only a handful of reports.
Blind or application read?
Resume-based. No report mentions essays or recommendations being referenced, and nearly all interviews open with a resume walk-through. One interviewer said admissions had given them specific things to ask, though the client found the questions generic. Prepare as if the interviewer knows only your resume.
Scheduling
Invitations come by email with a portal calendar to self-schedule. Dates can be limited, but some slots fall outside work hours, which helps if you are working, and admissions has been flexible about rescheduling. In earlier cycles, LEAD invitees registered online and were assigned a slot, sometimes only the day before. Most clients did not learn who their interviewer was in advance.
Cornell Johnson · What clients report
Inside the interview
The feel of the room
Friendly and conversational in nearly every report, and several clients said it felt like a chat with a current student. The focus is fit and plans: two reports explicitly note no behavioral questions at all. A couple of interviews were noticeably more probing, with the interviewer challenging the applicant's intentions, career path or commitment to Johnson.
What our clients say happens
Clients report a short, friendly conversation that usually a 30-minute slot, sometimes running a little over, with roughly 25 minutes of questions and a few minutes for yours. Interviewers rarely probe stories in depth. Follow-ups tend to be practical: your backup plan if the target path does not work out, how you will recruit for a niche goal, and who you have talked to at Johnson. Several interviewers asked what you do for fun and which clubs or concentration you would choose. Some seemed loosely prepared or more focused on selling the program. One client found it the most probing interview of their season and felt the school was testing whether they were a yield risk. LEAD applicants also did team exercises, a leadership case and dinner with faculty and students.

Very conversational and went by quickly. Much more focused on fit at Johnson than on behavioral questions.
Ran over time but was a good conversation. The interviewer was open about being expected to ask certain questions and steering back to them.
