Michigan Ross · At a glance
Friendly, scripted, behavioral
A friendly alum works through a set script: who you are, why an MBA and why Ross, then four or five 'tell me about a time' stories with pointed follow-ups.
Who interviews you
Alumni dominate: 25 of 32 reports were with an alum, 6 with a current student (all of the student interviews were 2018 through 2021), and 1 with school staff.
Where
Early reports (2018 and 2019) were in person, either on campus in Ann Arbor during an interview day or with an alum in a hub city. From the 2020/21 cycle onward every report is virtual (Zoom, Google Meet, or Teams), and recent reports note that interviews were virtual even when an in-person meeting would have been easy.
How long
Number of interviews by length, from the 15 MBA Protocol clients who reported one.
Interview style
Behavioral (tell me about a time)
Nearly every report lists a resume or 'tell me about yourself' opener, why MBA and why Ross, and then three to six behavioral prompts drawn from a recognizable bank (influence without authority, tough feedback, diverse teams, ambiguity, failure). Several applicants note the interviewer seemed to be working through a required script.
Blind or application read?
Blind (resume only). Reports consistently describe interviewers working from the resume (applicants upload it to the portal before the interview); nobody mentions an alum referencing essays or recommendations.
Scheduling
Invitation arrives by email with a link to a portal where you upload your resume and pick a date or region; within about a day you receive the name and email of your matched alum and you reach out to schedule directly, with a roughly two-week window to complete it. All reports from 2022 onward say the interviewer's identity was shared in advance. Interviewer reassignments happen and one applicant advised not to worry about it.
Michigan Ross · What clients report
Inside the interview
The feel of the room
Almost every report describes the Ross interview as friendly, and many say conversational or relaxed. Underneath the warmth, the format is a fairly structured behavioral interview: after a short intro and the why MBA / why Ross questions, interviewers work through a set list of 'tell me about a time' prompts, often with follow-ups that press on your specific role, the impact, and the result. A minority of reports (about 6 of 32) describe the interviewer as stiff, professional, or evaluative, and a few mention the interviewer typing notes throughout. Several alumni interviewers open by introducing themselves and loosen up noticeably when the applicant asks about their own Ross experience.
What our clients say happens
Clients report a predictable structure: a brief self-introduction, why MBA and why Ross, then a block of behavioral questions, then time for the applicant's own questions. Interviewers are generally pleasant and several are described as genuinely engaged, but roughly a third of reports mention substantial follow-up questioning, with interviewers asking for clarification on the applicant's exact role, the outcome, or how the applicant handled pushback. A few reports describe the interviewer repeating answers back in their own words to confirm understanding, which some applicants found unsettling. Interviewers typically reserve 10 to 20 minutes at the end for questions, and many extend well past the stated 40-minute window when the conversation turns to the alum's own experience. Preparation levels vary: most interviewers appear to have read the resume but little else, while one did extensive background research. A short interview with only a few questions is not necessarily a bad sign.
In clients’ own words
How did the interview feel?
Friendly 26 Professional 8 Conversational 7 Casual 3 Relaxed 3 Laid back 2 Stiff 2 Engaged 2 Warm 2
Words clients used to describe the tone, counted across 32 MBA Protocol client debriefs, 2018 to 2026. Red marks a less comfortable experience.
Almost every question came with a follow-up. The interviewer repeated back what they heard to avoid miscommunication.
Inviting the interviewer to jump in with questions while walking through the resume worked well: it let the interviewer dig into details and led to a genuine conversation where anecdotes came up naturally.
