Duke Fuqua · At a glance
Warm, team-first, behavioral
A friendly chat, usually with a second-year student, that works through why Fuqua, goals and a steady run of team, diversity, conflict and failure stories.
Who interviews you
Second-year students conduct the large majority (29 of 34 reports); the remaining 5 were alumni, all virtual and all from 2022 onward. Students are often matched by career path or background, which several applicants noticed.
Where
Before 2020 interviews were on campus in Durham, often during open interview periods or on-campus visit weekends. From the 2020/21 cycle the majority have been virtual on Zoom (24 of 34 overall), with on-campus interviews returning from 2023 as an option applicants can choose in the portal.
How long
Interview style
Hybrid behavioral + conversational
Nearly every report pairs the standard intro, why MBA, why Fuqua and goals questions with several 'tell me about a time' prompts on teamwork, conflict, leadership, diversity and failure, delivered in a conversational tone.
Blind or application read?
Blind (resume only). No report describes the interviewer referencing essays or other application materials; most open with tell me about yourself or a resume walk-through and follow-ups build on what the applicant says in the room. This is consistent with the school's stated practice.
Scheduling
Invitation arrives by email pointing to an application portal update. On-campus interviews are booked through a portal (often tied to open interview periods or visit weekends) and the interviewer's name is usually not shared in advance. For virtual interviews, Fuqua matches you with a student or alum and emails both parties (sometimes taking about a week), after which you coordinate a time directly with the interviewer; in those cases you know who it is beforehand. Interviews can also happen during Duke-hosted on-campus events.
Duke Fuqua · What clients report
Inside the interview
The feel of the room
Almost every report describes the Fuqua interview as friendly, relaxed and conversational, often the most relaxed interview the applicant had that season. A handful describe a stiffer or more professional opening that warmed up partway through, and two reports describe a genuinely stiff or rushed interviewer. Underneath the warmth the structure is a steady list of behavioral prompts about teams, leadership, conflict, diversity and feedback, and interviewers do take notes and ask follow-ups. Several applicants noticed the interviewer was clearly probing how serious they were about Fuqua specifically.
What our clients say happens
Clients consistently report a warm, get-to-know-you conversation that still works through a long question list; one interviewer mentioned having a long list of questions to choose from. Follow-ups are common and a few applicants found the interview tough in substance even while the tone stayed friendly. Most interviews run 45 to 60 minutes, and interviewers typically reserve 5 to 15 minutes at the end for the applicant's questions; a few alumni interviews stretched well past the hour because the conversation kept going. Interviewers generally seemed engaged and prepared, though a few interviewers seemed distracted or flat, and some interviews ended early with little time for questions. Several applicants felt the interviewer's main aim was to gauge how seriously they wanted Fuqua rather than treating it as a backup. Pace is unhurried in most cases, with the occasional interviewer who keeps a strict eye on the clock.
