NYU Stern · At a glance
Short, personal, plan-focused
Thirty minutes with someone who has read your whole file and wants to know your plan holds up: recruiting, backup options, and how you will use Stern and New York.
Who interviews you
Admissions staff run every Stern interview we have seen: either an adcom member or someone interviewing on admissions' behalf (an 'agent of the adcom'). Our clients have not been interviewed by students or alumni.
Where
Every Stern interview our clients have reported was virtual on Zoom, right through 2026.
Interview style
Point-blank application probe
Questions are tailored to the applicant's file (target companies, backup plans, quant weakness, Pick Six photos, recruiting plan) and aim to confirm the plan is realistic, with a few behavioral and leadership prompts layered in.
Blind or application read?
Application read (interviewer has the full application). Clients report interviewers asking about specific Pick Six photos, naming a weak quant profile outright, and checking that answers match the application. One said the interviewer 'knows about all my applications very well.' That matches the school's stated practice of adcom-conducted interviews.
Scheduling
You are invited by email with a link (often Calendly) to pick a slot, sometimes with only about a week's notice. Stern generally does not tell you who your interviewer will be. One client was told only that it would be a 'trained admissions professional.'
NYU Stern · What clients report
Inside the interview
What our clients say happens
Clients describe a compact 30-minute conversation, roughly 20 minutes of interviewer questions and 10 for yours. The interviewer has read the file and asks pointed, plan-focused questions: your backup if the target role does not materialize, which companies you are targeting, what Stern resources you will use to recruit, how you will get involved, and what being a student in New York means to you. Behavioral questions appear but are a minority, usually on teamwork, conflict or a frustrating period, plus a leadership-style question or two. Some clients found the tone colder or more scripted than they had been led to expect, especially with agent-of-adcom interviewers. Recent adcom interviews felt personal, moving quickly past why MBA and why Stern because the application already covered them, and spending the time on passions and long-term vision. Questions are direct and the pace is brisk.
Why MBA, why now and why Stern were combined into one question, apparently because the application already covered them.
